Test Driving a Motorhome

As you decide to buy a motorhome either a new or and old one, you have to make sure that the car is completely flawless. Even a brand new motorhome may have certain technical faults which in the beginning may seem minor. If you tend to ignore, it increases with time and within a few months creates great damage to your motorhome.

There are a set of procedures that you should follow before buying a motorhome.

  • For a new motorhome first go to a dealer and get a test drive. Very few dealers can arrange for a test drive of a motorhome on a short notice. It is better if you inform him beforehand and in the mean time you collect every detail about the brand of motorhome you are going to buy.  Ask the sales person about planning the route and loading additional passengers in the car.
  • Make sure that the test driving demonstration model has the same engine configuration and specifications as the model you are to buy.
  • If you are to buy an older motorhome you must insist on starting the motorhome yourself. If you see that the vehicle has been started before hand you can be more or less sure that it has been done to heat up the engine and disguise fault in the engine.
  • You must ask to replace the clutch if it jams at the top of the pedal's travel giving the sign of it being worn.
  • If the steering pulls to one side, the tracking needs to be adjusted. If there's a lot of play in the steering wheel, the steering gear may be worn and that is fairly serious.
  • If the steering pulls to one side, or if there's a lot of play in the steering wheel, the steering gear may be worn and must be replaced.
  • There are lots of allied things you need to check viz, whether your feet touch the motorhome floor comfortably, the motorhome copes properly with the weight distribution etc.
  • Take a long test drive to test the genuine comfort level of the motorhome.
  • Does the accessories fitted in the motorhome work properly. If not so let the seller know it immediately.
  • Perform a noise test on the motorhome and see if there is any squeaking and rattling noise. If so make sure that the seller has done everything to stop the noise.
  • Basing on the quality of service, size of the workshop and cost select a service agent that would be best for you. Consider spare parts costs and servicing cost over the vehicle's life span.
